Millwork

Architectural millwork and wall paneling

We mill wall paneling, wainscot, interior and concealed doors, casings and trim in the same wood and finish as the cabinetry, so grain, color and reveals line up from room to room. It is all built in our Malibu shop and installed by our own crew.

Paneling, doors and trim from one shop

Architectural millwork is the woodwork that is part of the building rather than furniture in it: paneled walls, wainscot, door and window casings, base, crown and interior doors. When the same shop builds the millwork and the cabinetry, the species, finish and reveals match, and a concealed door can sit flush in a paneled wall without a visible frame.

Our work gallery includes floor-to-ceiling oak entry paneling with a concealed door, oak gym paneling, an oak-clad portal and fireplace surround, and an oversized oak pivot entry door.

Drawn with the architecture

Paneling depends on what is behind it: blocking, outlets, switches, HVAC grilles and access panels all have to land on the panel layout. We draw the millwork with the architect, coordinate those locations with the trades, and finish everything in the shop. Shop drawings typically take 1–2 weeks after the site measure, and fabrication typically takes 6–10 weeks from drawing approval.

FAQ

Common questions

What is the difference between millwork and cabinetry?
Cabinetry is boxes, doors and drawers: kitchens, vanities, closets. Architectural millwork is woodwork that is part of the building: paneling, doors, casings, trim and surrounds. We build both, which keeps wood and finish consistent through the house.
Do you build interior doors?
Yes, including doors that match paneling and concealed doors that sit flush in a paneled wall. We also build oversized pivot doors.
Can paneling hide outlets and access panels?
Yes. We lay out the paneling with outlets, switches, grilles and access panels located in the drawings so they land cleanly on the panel joints or are concealed behind removable panels.
How long does it take?
Shop drawings typically take 1–2 weeks after the site measure, and fabrication typically takes 6–10 weeks from drawing approval.
